Tyres for 990 Adventure

Postby KTM Chris » Sun Aug 20, 2017 7:56 pm

Tyres need changing (reason for keeping quiet, as a newbie, on here) and up to now I've been using the MT90 Scorpions.

Anyone with a similar bike have alternatives to suggest? The ktmforum is all over the shop when I searched there. Helpful but too much.

I don't have a big adventure bike but if i did i would try either continental tkc 80s, or cheaper Mitas E10/E09.

Is it just tarmac riding to get to/from byways?

Thanks Vinnie, unfortunately it won't just be for tarmac between trails (at the moment) but also for riding with LAM; trips to Bedford and beyond to visit family and riding for SERV SSL. So a fair amount on tarmac.

Not much wrong with Scorpions on or off road except when it gets muddy. Heidenau K60 has wider gaps and so doesn't hold mud as much so better traction in mud. Not a fan of TKCs. Compromised both on and off road and popular with the wannabe brigade.

Really appreciate the feedback. I like the Scorpions but they're hard to find at a reasonable price.

Spoke with Gabriel from Zen Overland today and he took the time to email suggestions. Generally seemed to concur with burls, though they don't sell Mitas and on the ktmforum people rate them.

He really rates Motoz but they're a bit pricey, then the K60 then Mefo then the TKC.

See you at a rideout. When I've got the tyres.

I've had a few on the 990, K60 ATM gone down to 140 rear as there is no centre band, they're a good 50/50 tyre, last a while, just done 3500miles around Europe and some 800 miles last weekend up in Yorkshire on some quite tricky stuff, still loads of life in them, if your more trail or mud have a look at the new E12 a few of the 690 boys had them and loved the handling, but for mix trail and road the world seems to agree on MT21's
Off the beaten track!.
