First bike help please

Hi, I'm going to start green laning soon and was wondering if anyone has used an xr 125 or is it to under powered and badly equipped for a newbie, used to riding 600 to 1200's on the road so a 125 just sounds er well small but back in the day my old motocross bike was only a 125 and that was great fun.
I guess i would have to fit a bash guard, hand guards, drop the front sprocket down a tooth or two and put a good set of tyres on it, but if they are a pile of crap anyway I don't want to waste my money.
Just ordered some kit to wear and will look out for some second hand boots on fleabay to help get me started but as to what bike to use that is more of a challenge, defo want four stroke and lazy/battery start but only have £1500 to £2000 to spend on my first bike so not sure on the best options.
