"Moral of the story.....especially the older farts, smallest of injuries that don't heal 'completely', get yourself down to a&e or your GP" (Fleegle)
Worrying stuff! Good job someone made you go to A&E.
Having read your tale, as my right knee is still very swollen and numb and very painful in one area (sharp pain rather than bruising type pain) almost three weeks on, I'm back to see my doc this afternoon, rather than just taking the usual "it'll sort itself out eventually" approach.
Thanks for the sensible advice.
Speedy recovery to you (and to me )

Re: Surrey TRF current injury list
Glad its of some use
As an update, I had an appt with my GP today. To say he was surprised is an understatement.
From Knee to ankle over the last few days has gone from various shades of purple to bright pink, when it was at its most tender. The swelling is still there and goes from being painful to fecking painful in equal measures.
The diagnosis is Cellulitis which in its most popular form is caused by a break in the skin getting infected. However there wasn't any cuts but the GP says this isn't uncommon. A number of factors could have contributed but hard to track down the exact cause (even though I know it was the whack I took)
With almost a weeks worth of penicillin down my neck, he has told me to expect another couple of weeks as a minimum if I am lucky. Its very hard to say how long it will take to heal due to the variables, but he reckoned anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months. I'm not sure if I like the sound of the last bit. He also mentioned that some cases can be quite viscious with the swelling so bad it cuts off the blood supply leading to gangrene setting in, and in some cases amputation. My doctor knows how to put a smile on your face
I am able to put weight on it for short periods, but suffering cabin fever yesterday I decided to nip into the garage for 2.5hrs. It was on fire after that and I have suffered today as a result of it swelling up overnight
Ah well, at least it's cut my drinking down

Re: Surrey TRF current injury list
Well having read that I think I've got away very lightly.
My doc (who is also a close friend with whom I've done lots of sports stuff, and who has also tended most of my footie injuries) says no breaks for me or serious damage to cruciate ligament, just massive patellar bursitis and bruising and some tear damage to thigh muscles and ligaments around knee. He drew off half litre of watery looking blood from around the knee to reduce the swelling and what a difference it has made! 75% of pain disappeared instantly and I can bend my knee again, enough to get back on a bike!
Now some physio to strengthen and mobilise knee and make sure no problems with scar tissue in muscle, tendons and ligaments. What was shocking was the effect, in only 17 days, that limping, guarding, and minimising use of the leg has had on the quad muscle! Age must accelerate loss of muscle mass and tone. I've had many leg injuries over the years but never lost muscle so fast before!
As I say, I've got away lightly. Your injury sounds like the thing I was most worried about developing and why I was very happy to have the fluid drawn off so the risk of infection was (hopefully) removed.
Make sure you eat lots of good veg and fruit in your diet, and drink water to help your immune system to do its job properly. I would recommend getting your doc to refer you for physio as soon as the infection and pain allows.
Hopefully the most pessimistic prognosis will not prove to be the case and you'll be back up and riding again soon.
Best regards,
NJ

welcome back bobby boy !
at least there is one silver lining to your injury
you got an award at club night
search.php?keywords=awards
you and jez both got awards for worst injury of 2012 ....
now looking at those pictures again ... I think your looked "worser" so probably should have won it outright.
I think we tweaked Jez's award and he won "worst filmed injury 2012" thinking about it ...

BALLS !!!! Just come back from consultant ortho today, and he reckons that the plate they installed was contaminated with MRSA. Now gotta be admitted back into NHS Kingston Hospital for plate removal plus super hd iv antibiotics, could be in that dump for weeks. Not good at all.
So maybe i cant come out to play for a while yet, bleedin put my life on hold again.

I've just manged to get my road Sidi's on without them pinching
I think it will be a good few weeks before the off road boots even get an attempt though

Back on bikes again
Touch nervous on greasy road surface but it feels great to be back on two wheels.
Next up a spot of skiing, then to see what all this Surrey TRF lane riding stuff is all about
