Luke doesn't type! He has people to do that for him!
I think I have to self-report as an injury
It goes like this:
Cold night, greasy road surface, coaches and vans using road so probably diesel spills, just setting off so very cold tyres, forgot to put engine setting on Rain Mode, ignored frost sign illuminated on clock, set off, twisted throttle felt bike rear end slip to right, tried to bring back in line, bit of fishtail, me and bike went down heavily, hit the ground with right knee as first point of impact plus weight of bike, then shoulder and head hit the ground.
Hit kill switch. Sat up, checked all limbs still attached and only right knee screaming at me. Pulled right leg out from under bike, took off bag and helmet, picked up bike. Got used to pain then checked bike over.
Damage: Broken front right peg, broken rear brake lever, broken indicator glass, broken air deflector, then I saw a bit of water in road, radiator side guard bent and seemed to have twisted it's bolt from radiator. 5 mile journey home.
So, start again, some water still in system and, on cold night, air cooled bike but only a problem when stopped at 2 sets of traffic lights when water leaking rapidly from radiator. Got home engine temp still on normal 3 bars. Phew!
Damage repair estimate £700
Injury list: X-ray shows no immediately obvious sign of fracture. Possible ligament damage but can't tell for definite until the swelling goes down. Patella probably not actually fractured. Probably just a severe patellar bursitis.
Leg now in an adjustable splint to prevent lateral movement. Ruptured calf muscle. Bruised hip. Wrenched right shoulder and one sprained finger joint.
Fracture clinic next week to check once swelling has subsided.
Crash helmet destined for dustbin.
Ski trip over New Year not now a realistic prospect. Football out of the question for a few weeks.
All of that could have been avoided if I'd put my brain in gear before I put the bike in gear!
I hate being unable to ride. Might have to buy another bike with a more gentle knee angle to see me through this dark period!

Hi Luke,
It was the new Aprilia Shiver which I've been using as my work / commute bike.
Happily it was not the new big one!
I had hoped to see you on one of my now occasional visits to the centre of the Universe so that I could show you how slowly I can walk

Re: Surrey TRF current injury list
Following my only off on the ride out back on November 3, I finally got frogmarched to A&E today
The accident itself seemed rather innocuous, and certainly not the biggest I have had. I think it was Sean behind me who later said it looked liked I grabbed a handful of brake, but the consequence of that was the bike coming down on me, and particularly the footpeg smacking my ankle.
I managed to complete the day with no issue and it wasn't until the boot came off, the ankle started to swell and bruise. One week later and the swelling has reduced and the bruising was on its way out. At no point was it painful to walk
Move forward 7 weeks and there was still a small 'puffiness' above the ankle, yet it still hadn't been an issue and certainly no problems with mobility, aches or pains.
That is until last night. The first thing I felt was the cold. I was frozen to the core. The heating was cranked up to no avail. Then the shivering started, proper every inch of the body shivering. Decided to go to bed to try and keep warm and I noticed my ankle had blown up like a balloon, not that I thought there was any link at this point. Still couldn't get warm so out came the hat and gloves...in bed!! I eventually warmed up and then spent the rest of the night trying to cool down. Temperature was up and down like a yoyo ...at one point 38.8
So this morning, hardly able to walk, I got frogmarched to the A&E where I got bollickings from the nurses and doctors for leaving it so long, but as I explained I had no pains or discomfort prior to last night. The fever was all down to the poison on my leg caused by the initial swelling and the rupturing of something or other.
X-rays came up clean and the blood tests told them what they had thought. So I'm now pumped full of penicillin to try and reduce the swelling and that is my Christmas proper fecked.
Moral of the story.....especially the older farts, smallest of injuries that don't heal 'completely', get yourself down to a&e or your GP

Ouch, that's not too good, hope you're back to full strength soon, prob not much chance of making the Xmas ride out though
Not sure if that's allowed with penicillin.. ?
