Jobs to do during lockdown!

Pinched this from KTM Forum

Stay safe lads!

For anyone bored and needs to fill in some time and add value/piece of mind into their toys then consider these. Some should be normal maintenance but are often neglected as riding is more exciting. I’m sure there are more.....

1. Greasing head, swingarm and linkage.
2. Deep clean bike by removing all plastics and cleaning wires, components including air box. Use something like Rhino shine on everything after.
3. Clean carb. Re route breathers if not already done
4. Oil throttle cable, clean bar and inside twist grip.
5. File burs on lever ends, can also polish up with fine wire wool and autosol. Grease pivots. Consider new OEM levers if 100 hours old or more. They will feel feel like new, keep worn originals for spares and sale time.
6. Remove pipe. Wire wool and autosol, buff up back to gleaming new condition.
7. Remove rusty bolts. Wire brush to clean. Re fit after a wipe with a greasy cloth- loctite on bolts needing it.
8. Polish spokes and hubs- takes ages, results look amazing.
9. Re pack silencer. Strip and clean fuel tap on carb bikes. Maybe even rinse out your tank.
10. Short 2 min road ride then check wheel bearings. Old bearings that were just passable will now have dried out and rusted. This makes you think they are solid. A short ride loosens them up and it’ll be obvious if knackered. Grease axles.
11. lube all pivots including pegs.
12. Change plug if required.
13. Refresh brakes and clutch fluids. It’s easy when you have time, never nice the night before a ride.
14. Change fork oil. It’s an easy process when you have time. While you are in there clean fork seals. Re grease with a mix of grease and oil to make a light, runny seal grease. Add an O ring to the right fork leg lower for easy sag and travel checks.
15. Check all bolts torque.
16. Make a time card holder out of bicycle inner tube and carb vent pipe over a cable tie.
17. Ensure steering head bearings are tensioned correctly and forks not binding.
18. Remove battery. Clean. Test. Charge. Refit.
19. Check bulbs and switches.
20. Need an MOT soon? Get it ready now and double check everything.
21. Remove tyres, tubes, Tubliss and mousses. Clean and check everything. Refit as required, turn tyres if needed.
22. Change coolant with correct type, could always do gearbox oil etc to as a nice little service.
23. Sharpen foot pegs with a file.
24. Treat any rust/damaged paint on frames with rust killer.
25. Check valves on a 4t or better still get rid of the 4t for a 2t and save yourself the hassle.
26. On fuel infected bikes change filters- will stale fuel be getting ready to clog things up when it’s time to ride?
27. Check operation of things. Is it supposed to work like that or could it be better?
28. Cable tie wiring where required to be neat and solid.
29. Clean earth points.
30. Check brake discs for straightness and wear. Quick and easy to replace and keep originals for sale time.
31. Clean brake callipers. Tooth brush, air line and brake cleaner are your friends. Add a thin smear of coppaslip on the rear of pads to stop squealing brakes.
32. Re jet for current temps if you know what you’d normally use this time of year. Winter jetting from when you last rode will be rich.
33. Clean all air filters you have and inspect. Replace them if required.
34. Replace damaged plastics, stick down loose graphics with super glue after a clean with contact cleaner.
35. Check chain. Replace split link if worn.
36. Clean helmet and body armour. Use laundry sanitizer and fully submerge in a big tub of water and sanitizer. Rinse and drip dry. It’ll smell like new. Check everything for damage.
37. Clean all goggles. Remove lenses. Inspect. Replace as required.
38. Grease trailer wheel bearings if you use one. You’ll be very hacked off if once riding starts, you get stranded on the way to a ride. Check tires and lights as well.
39. Deep clean van.
40. Stock check of everything riding related. Make a list. Get ordering anything you need.

This lot should give you something to do![/QUOTE]
