HELP drz400s 2003

Postby 11jakey » Mon Sep 02, 2013 10:45 pm

Right so i have bought a DRZ400, it needs a MOT so i am going over the bike (Pre MOT) and the rear brake light flickers with the indicators....earth fault most likely, where on earth is the bloody earth/ground wire?!?! PLEASE HELP, i must be blind but i try to follow the wire and it disappears into the loom, i am totally stuck on this! where is the rear brake light earthed out? also where are the indicators earthed? i want to find it so i can clean it up!

also on right hand side on rear of bike behind the Panel, there is two small block type things....with wires bolted on, one block the fat wire goes to battery and small one to earth....but earth wire has broken? what should this be doing because the bike works fine still....also what does the other block thing do with the wires kind of bolted onto it and disappearing off into the loom!

Would appreciate any help here! need this sorted for MOT so i can hit the green lanes, oh and also on right hand side of the bike next to air filter box there is another black box? what is it? plus tucked by that box is a wire with a plug but wire has been cut and it is just tucked away behind the box, but yet again, bike works fine so what is it????

Thanks,
Jake

Earth normally one wire screwed to frame undead seat on most bikes I've owned. But am not too good with electrics myself.

If your lights dim when indicating it could be a sign of incorrect wattage bulbs being used as well maybe? Really can't help you there.

As to the parts you want identifying, post pics and I can probably tell you as can most other people here, the mechanics sides of things everyone seems to know a great deal.

Put some pics up, if the lights are interacting, there probably chafing in the loom, quick fix or check, make your own earth point for the indicator so you can check the feed, are the blocks the relays.
But as stated, better with pics and don't mistake what I say with someone who knows what there on about.
Off the beaten track!.

Hi guy,

Thanks for the response! I will try post some pics tonight.

All lights work fine, just brake light flickers a bit, it's been sitting for a while and it's very muddy so it prob corroded earth. I would thought there would be one main ground wire on the engine somewhere?!

Will post pics when can

Jake

I laughed so hard while looking at these pictures haha I realised I really know f all about your bike and am clueless!!

Electronic components which normally matter for a running bike are TPS, ignition cool and CDI but what you've pictured, I'm not sure it's those.

Just Google DRZ wiring diagram, you will get all the info you need, wire colours etc and they will tell you what goes to what. Before you start i would give the bike a real good clean, then break every connection you can find and clean thoroughly with a toothbrush and WD40, then find out what the unconnected wires are and if you need them. They could be anything from emission sensors to side stand switch. Also that isn`t a standard light, that may be faulty. I know when you put LED indicators on some bikes you can have problems.

Thanks for your help,
I don't find the wiring diagrams very clear, do you think it's ok to take panels off and hose it all down in there? Just avoid battery and bearings and carb? I mean these bikes go tank deep in water so surely it can withstand a good hosing to clear the mud so I can see the wires properly?

I regularly take all my plastics off and jet wash my bike, also use a good cleaner like muck off. It will make the bike easier to work on. I also jet wash my chain bearings etc then spray on some GT 85 water dispersant, WD 40 would do but not good for rubber. With regards the wiring diagrams, all you want to know is which colour goes where and does what, and what the unplugged colours are supposed to do, just do it one colour at a time. This is probably just going to be a dodgy connection, probably an earth or a block connector corroded and arcing across so try the block connectors that involve the indicators and lights first.

Do you jet wash all under the seat etc where all the wires are? They are filthy, is your bike ok to jet wash all that? The wires must be water proof surely.

Yes jet wash every thing, then spray with a water dispersant, every now and then break the connectors and clean using some thing like WD40, I personally prefer GT 85 . Strip the bike of seat and all plastics then jet wash.
