Urgent help!!! Drz400

Postby 11jakey » Sat Sep 21, 2013 9:44 pm

Need help!
Today I went for a ride, bike went lovely, got some fuel and then continued riding but about. 15min after it started to lose power when I opened up the throttle? It juddered and was popping out the exhaust, then I got home and left it running and it cut out, I tried to start it and it wouldn't start! Left it for 10min and it started, left it running for 1min and it just cut out again! It just dies down.
It has a good spark, good compression, I also removed carb (which was a nightmare) I cleaned jets and float was fine.

Put it all back together and started it and it ran for 1min then just cut out!!

WHAT THE HELL IS IT :(! Driving me mad. I can't use the bike.

Any help is appreciated.

Could you have Mis-fueled? Bunged a couple of litres of diesel in by mistake?

We're the exhaust gasses smokey and smell funny? If they were you probably did.

If you did there's no damage you need to worry about :)

But the bike shouldn't run at all well if at all on diesel. Drain the tank and try some fresh petrol.

It it's not that have you got any more clues?.

Did you ride through any water? Have a look at the air filter. Is it clean, seated properly, dry?

Thanks everyone for replying.

It's petrol cause it smells of it. But is it possible it's bad petrol? Got from some little texaco station which looked closed lol.
I shall drain it all then try with fresh petrol, would bad petrol cause these symptoms then?

Also could it be a coil if not fuel? It sparks well when I check the plug but that's the moment I check it. When the bike is hot and stops it could be something else.

I find it odd the bike runs fine then suddenly dies down and stops....

It runs, then stops. And won't start atall, then leave it for ages and it'll start again but just die soon after. :s. If bad fuel would it run atall? Why would it prevent it starting for so long? But when starts it fires up ASAP

Check the petrol cap breather pipe or breather hole. If it is blocked it will stop air entering the petrol tank and gives off these symptoms.

Ok thanks,
When I remove fuel cap it gives off the tssssss sounds. Like air releasing?

So now suddenly it won't start atall :(!
It has a spark, air, fuel, I cleaned all jets and the little valve that opens and closes with the float.
Maybe coil? Perhaps the spark isn't quite enough. It just won't go atall anymore.

Have you changed the spark plug cap? Sounds similar to my bike and was only the cap (not a DRZ admittedly)

Quick and cheap to check though.

Thanks for your suggestion, did yours have a spark though? Mine has a spark.
Maybe it's not good enough.
It's driving me mad, it has everything it needs to start but won't start but yesterday when it did start it rides lovely and revs fine. Until after 10min if running it'll cut out.

Seems like fuel starvation.

Are all the breather/vent tubes to the carb clean and clear ?

You said that it goes psssss when you open fuel cap. Your vent on the cap must be blocked; it should let air in and fumes out.

Also, how much crap is in the tank ? If you have any doubt about the fuel, swill out the tank and stick a couple of litres of new petrol in there or rig up a little temporary bottle. (I use the plastic tank of a lawnmower but almost any squeezy bottle will do. Make sure it has a vent hole)

How have you cleaned the carb ? A jet can still be partially blocked, even if you can blow through it. I take them out, hold up to the light and have a look.

I would have had a look at the fuel and vents first; taking the carb off a DRZ would be my last resort, they're a b'stard.

Mine has occasionally suffered similar issues in the past and it's usually down to a bit of water in the bottom of the carb following deep fording or mud caked in the vent tubes.
