Longest day ride out - Sun 21st June Fish & Chips

Postby mudeevee » Tue Jun 23, 2015 12:10 pm

Following Saturday’s Navigation event and evenings Bar-B-Q, we had setup a ride for those that fancied a long day out. The ‘fish & chip’ run was born!

Start point for this was Maino’s back garden (thanks again Iain) and the 9 riders were ready to go at 10am. At 9:55 we decided that we’d like to have fish & chips on the coast – so The Witterings was to be the destination……..

We headed off as nine groups of one, quite closely grouped (to keep within the code of conduct) from Guildford and rode south on lanes to Hindhead. A quick fuel stop before heading south again via some very dry lanes in Surrey, West Sussex & Hamps to another fuel stop at Rowlands castle.

Just after Hindhead, the groups became split in traffic and it took half an hour to get everyone back on track. From then on we decided to use the ‘2nd man drop off’ system – this worked flawlessly for the remainder of the day and it should be considered an option for any ride out.

Some road work followed to get us down to the sea-side at East Wittering where we all had take-away Fish & Chips from The Boulevard café (one of my favourites). Salt & vinegar soaked lunches were enjoyed on the sea wall – does not get much better than that!

After lunch we headed back to Rowlands Castle, ready for the afternoons jaunt. Interesting to see the attitude of people of their holidays towards a group of trail riders – most waved and smiled (a few of the fella’s looking enviously). Compare this to the miserable bunch we meet most weekends at Hindhead and it is very refreshing.

We did ride the only unpaved UCR on the Witterings on the way out, so another ‘tick’ on my personal list..

The ride back to Guildford was great – many lanes, great variety and mainly empty. We took in lanes from Waterlooville & Cowplains, through Butser Hill, Steep and on to Selbourne before heading North and East via Bordon, Alice holt and Tilford. We arrived back at Maino’s Guildford garden at around 7:30pm. A very long longest day!

Odometers on various bikes gave conflicting mileage, the lowest was 165 miles and the highest was just under 200 miles. Whatever the actual miles, I had a great, dust free day – unlike those behind!

Cheers
Derek
