News from Surrey Hills

Exerpt copied here from the latest newsletter- in view of the content, I fear the worst for Wolvens. (The cost of the new surface must have been alarmingly high, ( Beggars Lane cost £100,000) , this must be higher, and much more controversial. )

Welcome to the Surrey Hills newsletter for Spring 2021.

Leith Hill Greenway multi-user route

The first Surrey Hills Greenway was installed during Autumn 2020 with signage completed in February 2021. Known as the 'Leith Hill Greenway' this 15km multi-user off-road route links Box Hill with Leith Hill via Denbies Wine Estate. The project has been funded by The European agricultural fund for rural development (EAFRD) with Surrey County Council’s investment in resurfacing the Byway from Wotton to Coldharbour which had been damaged by off-road motorised vehicles.

Greenways are being designed as part of a strategic network of safe, off-road access routes for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. The emphasis is to go slowly, enjoy and be considerate to other users and the British Horse Society and Cycling UK’s Be Nice, Say Hi campaign will be promoted as part of the Greenways initiative.

Off-road impact: 4×4 vehicles causing damage to Surrey Hills

Off Road motorised vehicles are having a major impact on the Surrey Hills. The popularity of these activities through the woods and commons of this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with new tracks being illegally carved out on private land, has increased during lockdown and creates tension with landowners and leisure users.
Councillor Hazel Watson, Chairman of the Surrey Hills Byways Working Group comments; “It is awful to see this careless destruction of the local area. The grass and woodland of Mickleham Downs is an important haven for wildlife and plant species. Damage caused by off-road vehicles is a major threat to the Surrey Hills AONB and I urge the local community to alert Surrey Police to any antisocial behaviour taking place in our countryside spaces.”
