Insurance Issues

Postby Dave » Tue Jul 08, 2014 5:58 pm

Hey, just wondering if anyone's had any issues like what I'm about to say and if anyone's found a way around it...

My issue is that I've been riding for around 8 years. When I took out the insurance for my van the NO CLAIMS bonus was non transferable, standard.

When I insured the van they said it would have to go on a commercial vehicle policy. I explained that the van would not be used for any commercial purposes, it was domestic only, privately owned and used for pleasure purposes :P They said it doesn't matter because it's a van it would need to go on a commercial vehicle policy. At the time I did enquire about what would happen if it had windows, a bed and a cooker; making it a camper. They replied saying modifications would need specialist vehicle cover.

Now, the latest issue is I am trying to insure a car..

The car would need to go on a new Private Car Policy even if it would be part of a Multi Vehicle Policy. The van's commercial 2 years no claims is non-transferable onto a private policy.

I said that in that case I would sell the car to my business and put it on a commercial policy like the van is. They said it's impossible to do that as ALL CARS are put on Private Vehicle Policies unless the business takes out Fleet Cover.

Of course, like anyone, I said 'What do you do with Camper Vans and Minibusses?'

They said they go on Private Car Policies (even though they are ffffing vans!!! I mean.. WTF :?: :!: )

So, in short I am having to start all over again with a car and the cost of insuring was ludicrous at £1000; 26, no at fault claims, no convictions, no no-claims: mental.

Seems like my only option is to buy a 900cc fiesta for £100, insure that, let the no-claims build up over several years whilst it rots in a scrap heap somewhere until I can afford a proper car & just continue using my privately owned van on a Commercial Fully Comp Policy - Which covers me for driving other peoples' vans but not cars..

Does anyone know a way of insuring a car & van on the same policy or some other loop holes. Some of you lot are very in the know about these sorts of things so have my fingers crossed.
