Code of conduct- aggressive tyres

Postby stevent » Thu Oct 09, 2014 4:14 pm

I've posted up about the TRF AGM, myself and John Barber are going.

One of the proposals is to add the following to the TRF code of conduct:

Observe the Byway Code
Choose and use only tyres that are neither aggressive in appearance, nor destructive in use.
When travelling in groups, keep the numbers small, with a suggested maximum of six motorcycles.
Do not travel on unsealed roads during or following extreme weather conditions when they risk surface impact beyond a point of natural recovery when the weather improves.

The bit about group size we already operate so I think that is welcome.

We discussed the tyres point at club night and the consensus was that the code shouldn't be getting so prescriptive especially in relation to the *appearance* of tyres. Based on that discussion my view is to try to get the "appearance" bit deleted?

What do others think?

So does that mean only trials tyres would be allowed?

I definitely think that the appearance bit needs to go. Heck, there are those that don't ride trail bikes (such as my old folks for example) who think that anything 'knobbly' looks mean and aggressive, so it's a purely subjective clause and hence open to vast interpretation.

The only two I agree with is Byway Code and Group Size.

All of the rest makes me feel like the club wants to be seen to be doing everything to be the perfect companion when going to walk the lap dogs on a byway. On the flip side it seems like the club wants to bow to the man. - not interested.

And while we are at it why not wear bobble hats over our crash helmets and wear wellies instead of motorcross boots to make us look less aggressive. And after a days riding lets set fire to our bikes down at the local Ramblers club. After all we don`t want to upset any of the Anti Trail Rider brigade. What a complete load of bo##ocks, why are we pandering to and being dictated to while we go about our fully legal pastime. We are all sensible adults and everyone I ride with are courteous and respectful to other users and really don`t need to be told how to behave or what type of bike to ride or what tyres to use.Trail riding should be fun, that is why Surrey TRF is so popular, because we do have a laugh, but that does not make us a bunch of irresponsible idiots who need to be told what to do by a committee.

I'm with the that misery bum Billy

What we are doing is legal. Playing with words on our code of conduct makes no odds to the people that are trying to oust us, They seriously don't give a flying ferk about our tyres. The people that we are trying to appease wouldn't know the difference between a knobbly and slick. I understand the point about not completely knackering a trail if we are causing irrepearable damage, but then should we also take the same 'couldn't give a ferk' attitude that the LA have taken to the lane at Bighton?

Yes we should be making the right noises to show the Bumblers our intentions are good, but most of the geriatrics are stone deaf because their bobble hats are over their ears. Doubling the ride fee doubles the fighting fund. I know the pen is mightier than the sword, but I'd rather go into battle with a Samurai than a quill

Agree with the sentiments above. Too much pandering to the nimbies. I ride a road legal bike on legal roads, responsibly. The TRF would do well to remember what it stands for. I'd go as far to say I'm a little concerned there could be a parallel agenda here.

Say that they do shove this bit through, does this mean if we got into trouble with some nimbys wanting to take us to court, and we didn't have the type of tyre on that the TRF approve of, would we not be covered under their legal umbrella?

A road legal tyre is a road legal tyre.

I was just about to post a serious reply to this but after considering it......this must be a joke/hoax. really who would have aggressive tyres, i have always found mine to be passive and compliant although sometimes they are slippery little buggers.
Please........ if this is what the TRF is coming too we may as well get the white towel out.
