£1,000 bike advice

Hi all.

A mate of mine wants to learn to ride and has a budget of up to £1,500. Around £1,000 preferably.

He can't ride yet, doesn't plan to ride on the road and only really take it to pay and play days like Bagshot and Brick Kiln farm.

Any of you know of any bikes around or have any suggestions. He wants very low maintenance.

All advice welcome.

Yamaha WR250 is bulletproof, light and has more than enough grunt to do anything. Insanely low maintenance.

TTR is even less maintenance, more forgiving but might not be as 'fun' after a while.

Can find either for around that price.

As mentioned in previous threads, don't make the mistake of getting a 400+

A dirt bike for £1000 with very low maintenance, I`ll have one of those please..................

But, yeah anything under 1750 tends to need Swingarm, linkage, headrace bearings doing. Then there's the bent wheels, knackered pistons in the callipers and the forks have probably never been serviced. By that time you've spent enough to bring the sum up to 2k.

Got my yz125 for £800 and it needed serious work. The pain of trying to hammer out neglected decade old bearings is depressing. Have had enough of cheap 2nd hand bikes. All that happens is you buy them, pump some money and time into them, then sell them to a pr!ck who won't maintain it again.

If you've got the time for it, and more importantly the tools, it may save money.

Cheap bikes will always cost you loads of money in the end and will never be`low maintenance`.

Not in my experience. Maybe if you get a Serrow, TTR or an old XR which has been looked after by a more mature person but the guy is looking for something to use on Enduro practice days and all the above,or that type of bike, will not really be suitable. We are talking about £1000, the parts for my last engine rebuild were £600 and that`s the 3rd rebuild on a 5 year old bike. Add to that all the money spent on various bearings, seals etc and I would not consider it a low maintenance pastime whatever bike you have. Obviously the newer the bike the less abuse it is likely to have had so try and spend a bit more on the bike and hopefully a little less on getting it into good shape.

I would look at the crm250. I know of one going that has just been rebuilt (new piston and rings and replated) for £1600. Pm me for details.

No bus pass, a crm is a cracking bike. My brother has had it 18 months and is ready to move on. It's a great bike that has been well looked after. As for my crf you don't have the balls to ride it so shut up and get back on your chain saw.

Been there,done that,realised it was totally unsuitable as a trail bike for me, nothing to do with the size of my balls but good to hear you are totally happy with your low maintenance Honda. Are you coming to Wales in February that might be a good test as to the size of our balls.................
