Depends on what bike you have,
Lightweight trail bike or 1190 KTM.
As a rule of thumb to preserve the lanes use the least aggressive tyre you can. I personally run trials tyres (with the chocolate block tread pattern).

Re: What's the best tyre combination
I run an AC-10 on the rear and Maxxis Maxxcross IT on the front, on my WR250R. I do a lot of road miles (commuting) and these last well and give good grip for a trail tyre.
Regards "aggressive" tyres, there was an episode in TRF's recent history where the then National TRF Chairman proposed a motion containing similar words... https://forum.surreytrf.org.uk/viewtopi ... 1511606076
There was also a heated debate at the AGM and the words were removed, with various arguments, including that we might as well also ban "aggressive motorcycle engines" i.e. anything over a 125cc; and that "aggressive" tyres do less damage as they provide considerably better grip on softer surfaces...
So there are a lot of opinions on this topic!

On my KTM 450 EXC after trying many different tyres I like the Maxxis as well.
Good combination of grip and lasting a little while, although the road miles kill any knobbly tyre

Re: What's the best tyre combination
Depends if you just want to do trail riding or if you want to do enduro's, H&H's on the bike as well as trail riding?
I'd go with Maxxis maxcross pro's (IT or SI) for just trail riding. These are road legal, but you'll not be able to ride in endure etc. To ride endure you will need FIM approved tyres. Again Maxxis do a FIM range suitable for your bike - they won't last as well for trail riding, but will get you through scrutineering!
There are a few events (Somerset Exmoor ride and a few LDT's) that insist on using a trials tyre. I've never been a fan of these tyres - especially on a 450!
The fact that Simply Trail sells Maxxis, is not the reason I'm advocating them. We sell them because we think they are great tyres!
Whatever you choose, enjoy the riding and don't get hung-up on the kit!
