I'm hoping to pick one up while I'm in the US next week. Any recommendations?

GoPro is probably your best bet for stand alone wireless cams.

I had a ContourHD. Lovely cam, really small, but the vibrations from a day at BrandsHatch caused it to keep restarting during the capture and eventually stop working altogether.

Go Pro, although horribly bulky is proven and has a rather nice chipset which helps with the vibrancy of colours for such a small aperture whilst some but not all of the competition tend to be a bit washed out, which is bad for the overcast days of the UK IMO.

Still, if you want options:

ContourHD (good size bullet & immense accessories)
Rollei BulletHD (beware imitations with inferior chips when spending big money)
POV.HD
MiniDVR HD (best cc cam I ever seen until POV)

Go pro is my choice.

Had the Hero2 for a couple of years. Bit bulky, but nothing else I tried came close to the quality. Plenty of accessories, so I have stuck it to helmets, bikes, rear swing arms, a floaty thing for underwater use. More uses than just riding vids

Cheers fellas. Seems unanimous then as that's where my internet search pointed me to. They are 200USD in the states so a fair if not massive saving.

Hmm yeah that's always been a pain for me in the past. Needing a second battery to hand out at sea on a standup jetski was a pain. Can u swapout the battery on the new GoPro cam?

Two nice ways round that with the go pro hero 2 (not sure on newer models)

1. Get a battery backpack. This simply plugs onto the back of the GoPro. It contains a second battery. The kit comes with the backpack, a battery and a replacement back cover. Using this, I recorder all of the witley 100 when preparing the roadbook. So about 6 hours of recording.

2. Another nice accessory is the wireless remote. This gives you a switch you can stick on the handle bars. You can then use the switch to record/stop etc without having to bugger about taking your helmet off and using the switches on the GoPro. The other thing it apparently does is to stream live video to your iPhone. Not sure how well this works, but it would mean you can position the GoPro properly ( I have set it incorrectly before and recorded an hour of my front wheel)! They also do a screen backpack. This can be used to view video live, to ensure the thing is pointed in the right direction. Using this does mean a single battery though, so 3 hours max recording.

Enjoy

Derek

Can't comment on the 3 Mike (I have a 2), but I would imagine the battery life is a little poor because of the built in Wi-Fi. Guess you could simply turn it off for better battery life?

Addendum to my earlier comments:

Had the GoPro hero2 for around 18 months. It has been brilliant!

Last Friday I was gifted a WiFi backpack and remote. To make this work, there are several downloads to perform, which include plenty of sh1t that you don't need.

Worse than that is, when the camara has updated the firmware, it no longer works!

Spend a good few hours trying to sort it before complaining like mad to GoPro. Bloody furious!

So, hero2 - great

Wifi backpack and associated firmware - crap

Great offer, Steve, but trying to work out how you could help......

It is not orange. So matches and petrol?

It does not have a kick start. So, kick it anyway?

You can't cut the grass with it. So get Pete to service it?

You can't put a crash helmet on the Knob on the top of it?

You could come round, I'll point the camera at you. Then there will an extra knob at the front. Might work?
