Leatherhead lane classification help?

Postby Weet-rider » Thu Aug 29, 2013 10:26 am

Maybe someone familiar with the Leatherhead area and knowledge of the ROW history could help with this one?

There is a lane which starts at the end of Ermyn Way outside the Esso corp. hq building and runs East to Thirty Acre Barn. There are not any 'motor vehicles not permitted' signs at the beginning or along the way and on the Surrey CC/OS maps it's shown as an unrestricted byway.

However......if you follow this lane to the end at Thirty Acre Barn where the lane meets Shedherds' Walk and look behind you from where you came you will see a 'motor vehicles not permitted' sign?????

Maybe this is only for the section past Crampshaw Lane but there are no signs if you are travelling East.

Ok, it's only around 1km end to end and not too exciting but it's in my 'backyard' and handy for testing the bike after fitting new bits, tyres, etc.

To clarify, I'm not talking about Stane Street/Pebble Lane/Roman Road which is in the same area as I know this has restriction signs at each end.

There is a marked up snap shot of the OS map attached which hopefully will open up.

Thanks,

Dave W.

Unfortunately they put a TRO on a very short section at the Thirty Acre Barn end.

You can ride it from the Leatherhead/Ashtead end but you will have to turn around at the TRO section.

We tried to stop the TRO but were not successful, this is another example of dodgy TRO on spurious reasons, basically because the locals wanted to stop us using it. Luckily the council is a bit more enlightened these days.

This is the one that links up with the Mickleham Downs route, am I right?

From what I can recall its a legal byway and its on my OS map which is 2012 as legal. But it does look like it ends prematurely before the bridge so turning off it might be advisable.

Someone else here will know more

Steve,
Thanks for the facts and history on that one. I'll just ride it out and back to the clearing where the mobile phone mast/substation is smiling at the scowling dog walkers on the way (trying not to accidentally roost them) happy that I am on the right side of the law.

Dave,
Yes, you're right it links up with Stane Street and would have continued over Mickleham Downs finishing near Ryka's, all TRO signed now. Big shame, I bet that was a great ride back in the day.

Thanks,

Dave W.

Unfortunately the Byway from there to Mickleham was TRO'd many years ago.... Yes, it was a lovely route.

To All: Don't forget TRO's are not marked on ordnance survey maps, as the status hasn't changed. If unsure come to club night and consult our master maps or the councils list of BOATs which shows all TRO's.

Hey... That's a bit crap. TRO's suck even more now I know that they aren't in anyway represented in later editions of OS maps.

Why do 'they' make life so difficult!?
