Another +1 for the drop-off system (with designated tail-end charlie). I've ridden in, and led many road ride outs using this system, some upwards of 30 bikes, and never had a one where we've lost anyone yet.
However, if the group is smaller, and the lead rider has sight of the tail-end, then I'm not averse to slowing down a little before the junction to allow the group to bunch up more, then simply rely on line of sight.
