Can anyone recommend a new rear tyre for my Honda XR400, and maybe where to get the best price?
Must be road legal!

eBay.
Normally mine come from the seller called classic.enduro and they let you know when they are dispatched and likely to arrive. Very punctual.

Maxxis Cross IT,
Very knobbly, road legal MX tyre. Great for the trails, pretty good wear rate and not too horrible on the road.
Try eBay or the usual online stores; prices vary quite a bit. Try your local bike shop too; i've bought them from Elderfields for around the same money as 'tinternet.
I'll have a look when I get home and let you know what size I run on the Dee-arr-zee

+1 for the Maaxis, I go for the M6001 Intermediate Terrain, but there's allot to suit, also as stated, you may get them slightly cheaper on-line , but I'm a great believer in shop local, ( use them or loose them and all that, and no shipping fees.
)
http://www.motoward.co.uk/ are in Rudgwick on the A281, and have a good selection, and always there with good advice.

That is a good tyre!!!! Pity I never had my 4 Bang long enough to see what life I would get out of them. When the time comes I will be fitting Comp 3 rear and Comp 6 front.

I always have a Michelin on the front but dont really care about the back as it tends to go where the front goes.........................

Re: Rear Tyres
Rode Michelins for about 5 or 6 months before I became desperate to find something else because they weren't lasting long.
In their defence I was using the FIM approved tyre. I think it was the guy at Boretech that told me all the FIM tyres run the same tread and same compound. So it doesn't matter who you buy them off, they're all the same, naff.
Back on Maxxis tyres. Used to use them but they ways had NHS on the side so didn't use them when I got the WR. But now they don't
Edit:
Just had a google. The FIM are meant to be a soft compound to try and reduce damage to land. Sound plausible?

Re: Rear Tyres
I know some people think they are horrible, but I recently got a Mich AC10 on the rear and it seems OK to me. Road legal, long-lasting due to deeper blocks than an FIM enduro tyre (and I don't imagine you're planning on doing enduros, so you don't need FIM) and incredible value http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130854737592 £43.40 delivered!!
The sizing is a bit weird, if you normally run say a 140 width, you will probably want a 120 AC10. I think I'm running a 110 on my KTM 250.
How to find your size
AC10 Sizing...............Michelin MX size
80/100-21..............................90/90-21
100/100-18...........................120/90-18
110/100-18...........................130/80-18
120/90-18...........................140/80-18

Re: Rear Tyres
That's a good price on an AC10 they used to be my tyre of choice but started getting expensive so I switched to Maxxis; might have to have a better search around when time to replace
(summer is on the way though so the tyre that's on there now will stay until it's nearly shiny in the middle)

AC10 get my vote, good for if you do a lot of road miles
