I'm taking the XR650R for a ride on Sunday and wanted to gather some thoughts on gearing. The main problem i have (aside from the kick start and overall weight) is the power delivery. Its a bit all or nothing.
I currently have a 42 tooth rear sprocket that i put on for longer trips, i also have a 48t sprocket on the shelf. so the question is...
Will i find it easier to control/deliver the power with the larger sprocket or with the smaller one? With the smaller one the bike has to work a bit harder will pick up speed slower, but requires more throttle/clutch movement.
(I'm well aware that this is a silly bike to take on the lanes, As soon as funds allow i will getting a 250. )
thanks!

Re: Gearing...
The size of the front sprocket will also be a factor. It also depends on how much slow and technical riding you plan to do.
I am sure that you have looked on the forums, I found this link which has a conversation along the same lines.

48 on the rear seems to be closer, but again it depends on what is on the front.

Re: Gearing...
The 42 will make it less `lively`.

Re: Gearing...
I have found on most of my enduro trail bikes 250 2 stroke and all the way up to a 610 Husqvarna that a 14 tooth front and a 48 rear works really well if you use higher gearing it may well give you a good speed on the road without reviving to high but tends to make the engine push you to hard on the tricky sections on the trail . On my current bike which is a 525 Ktm with this gearing I can still cruise at 60 + and can use second gear for the likes of going Butser.
