It's the bit of metal, normally rectangular in shape there used to join a shaft to a gear for example, both parts have a grove running through them, called the key joint.
So to somerise, it stops the roundy roundy bit slipping on the pokie pokie bit.

Right I got ya. That's the bit of ally pressed into my crank. I think Stu's dumbing it down confused me a bit lol! When I did my fly wheel mine looked more meaty than the one in that pic and in good nick so I hopefully won't be seeing as sad a day as Bev did any time soon!

What bike is in the pic out of interest?

Brilliant!

I don't get it though, would that throw the timing out and stop it running?? Seems weird... Would have out money on the coil..

Never saw Stewie's post already explaining that it is a keyed joint...

Dave me ol mucker, just pulled that off the tinterweb to show what a keyed joint looks like, have not got a clue what engine that is on the bench? :?

This could have been me a month or 2 back. Issue started at the Exmoor ride. New plug sorted the problem. Starts first kick again!
