Special Dave & Stewie - where were you!
Tarenig Rally – ATRC 2nd thoughts!
Back in May I popped my Rally Cherry by taking part in the Pikes Peak. The event left me smiling and advocating the rally merits to everyone I know. It was simply some of the best riding I’d experienced - faster fire roads and technical stuff that I could cope with and enjoy without fearing for my life!
A fairly healthy work and family life meant that the next Rally I could have a go at would be the Tarenig. In the meantime I’d started a thread on the Surrey TRF forum to let people know how good the Rally riding was in the UK – the result was that rather than riding alone, I’d be joined by Dave and Sean from the TRF and we’d be meeting up with Jez, who has been riding Rally’s for a couple of years.
Three vans set off from Surrey on Saturday morning, arriving mid afternoon at the paddock. Took an hour or so to setup the easy-ups, bar-b-q, beds and work area – by 6 we had completed last minute maintenance (2 chain changes, 1 set of rear wheel bearings a couple of air filters and some brake pads) and were a couple of beers to the good! Food followed and plenty of smoke to send the mossies and midges elsewhere. Just as we decided to call it a night, Jez and Mossy popped in for a beer and a chat. The chat led to even more bike maint, as Jez unloaded his bike so that Mossy could rip the p*ss out of the front suspension setup! An hour later we jointly reached the conclusion that Jez’s bike needed a complete fork rebuild – but he’d ride it anyway!
Sunday arrived early, as did the hangover. A quick coffee sorted heads out and we signed on, went through scrutineering and transponder fitting. All nice and slick. As our start numbers were in the 170’s we had plenty of time for breakfast, last minute bike checks and a good nose around the start area. Nice to see Wynn Hughes on duty with Freestyle – I’d met Wynn 3 years ago when starting the off-road riding for some training. Nothing but respect for a man who can ride that smoothly and fast!
10:57 came around and the four of us headed off on a sighting lap. As this was only my 2nd event and Dave & Sean’s 1st, we only had three laps to complete. So we set off and took a fairly leisurely pace. Jez had a few ‘moments’, but we waited and rode as a group. It turns out that Dave is a tad quicker that the rest of us and he pulled us along and pace increased. Being at the back of the start list did mean that we came across a few ‘blockages’; riders stuck on the slippy slate accent and a couple of the ‘big’ bikes struggling on one or two of the descents. All friendly stuff though and riders and Marshall’s helped when needed. Back to the paddock for a quick drink and it was immediately clear that Dave & Sean were hooked – huge grins and talk of great course. They’ll be back!
Lap 2. Dave led us of on this one and I found him much quicker than me! However, it did have the effect of pulling me along and going at a pace that I may not have done alone – cheers Dave! It turns out that Dave and Sean (both debutees) were quicker than myself – bloody cheek! This lap was fairly full-on for me and I think we completed the whole lap in under 50 mins (including a fag break)! For me it was fast and furious – but with loads of mistakes! Jez had a couple of ‘moments’ – we decided to blame the dodgy front suspension and not the rider!
Final lap. My ageing body was beginning to give me some unsubtle hints – legs cramping on the first long downhill, arm pump on a couple of climbs – how I wished I’d started this 30 or 40 years ago! I decided to try and ride slower, but smoother. The result was less pain, less mistakes and a really enjoyable lap. My concentration on the trail ahead did mean that I had no idea who or what was behind me – so apologies to a faster rider (No 56)? who passed me on the special – there was no intention of holding you up, just lack of experience and ability!
At the start/finish the 4 of us re-grouped and decided a 4th lap might be one too many! Burger, tea and chatting to a few riders completed the day.
Conclusions:
A great course – good mix of going. Challenging yet quick.
Get some non Rally riders involved – for me the whole weekend was made better by having buddies I have ridden with on lanes for a couple of years join in. The camping, bike maint, beer and banter complete the experience – cheers Dave, Sean & Jez (Oh and Mossy)!
Will I do it again – YES!
Will I score points – seriously doubt this, but I don’t ride for points. I ride to improve if I can. I think Dave and Sean (both on 2T 300cc) will take points.
Great organisation! Pretty slick to get 179 riders around a 30 mile course several times with so few issues. Great job – please keep it up!
As always, thanks to everyone who organised, marshalled, cooked, medicated, pointed, guided, timed, photographed and wrote things down.

Yep - they are the Witley 90th Anniversary shirts - what you can't see is the 'Strongbow', 'Stubble' and 'Mudeevee' on the back.
Mmmm a few hair raising moments on the fire roads. Managed to control the bowels though!
