Old and New

Postby Cabby » Fri Dec 28, 2012 12:09 pm

I'm the old bit. Mid 50's, been back on bikes since 2005.

Last 5 or so years on my old 600 Transalp (I love it!).

Did the Stella Alpina on it in 2011.

Just been tempted to buy (good terms) 1997 DR350....very Mondo looking. :?

Just failed MOT...about 9 things but most revolve around the number plate, although it's been through a few times like it.

Sorting out under way, then use it on the road to get used a different bike.

So the new bit is Off Road riding...little bit done in the dry on the Transalp but I'm not silly enough to think it's that relevant.

Hope to see some of you soon to teach this old dog some new tricks.

Thanks for reading this(longer than planned) post.

Kevin. :)

Hi Kevin,

Dont' worry! You're not alone. I haven't done much offroading and only started in 2009 and even then it was quite sporadic.
First, I did BMW Offroad School Level 1 course - money well spent! Learnt some basics and gave me a starting modicum of confidence (despite shoulder barging a tree on second day when believing I could leap a large stone sitting in the rut I was riding in).
Then in 2010 4 days in Spanish mountains with Touratrail - awesome fun and more confidence gained (no trees hit but a couple of small offs).

I bought offroading bike last December after joining TRF. Didn't get around to doing anything until about May then checked the OS and Surrey Interactive maps, and the current ByWays / Restrictions list, and made first gentle foray into Surrey - Bockets to Leith Hill and back.
Then a couple of Enduro practice days (Blue Light at Bagshot and Kent Enduro) which told ne that I'm not an Enduro rider
Then a couple of trips on the Ridgeway over near Marlborough and a gentle 2 day event in Wales in October (WTRF Cambrian Rally).

Now I'm planning (once leg injury resolved) to try to go out regularly with Surrey TRF in rideouts suited to my ability. I know I will be far slower than most but from what I read on the site these are a decent bunch of guys who are happy to accommodate all levels of rider so that all members maximize their enjoyment of the common interest.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.

Hi, welcome, where are you trying to MOT the bike? It may pay to find a garage that's more sympathetic to " unsurfaced roads bikes" rather than than the usual pocket rocket emporiums   .

Hi kevin,

Welcome to the TRF, please have a look at the new member information sheet, contained within this section of the forum.

Wasn't sure if you have joined just the forum or the TRF.

Regards
Steve

Thanks for the replies.

MOT at Chessington Motorcycles. Had my Alp done there several times plus bit of work for the Stella (chain).

Very good mechanic there I think and they've spotted some stuff that needs doing.

Bit harsh on the undersize(apparently..whoops) but clear plate and the angle on the rear mudguard. It doesn't have the plate holder still on it but it has a Hepco and Beck (is that right?) rack and panniers so I can fit the new plate to that.

When I break it I'm sure the solution will be at hand from y'all. :)

Steve, I registered with the TRF (ended up with wrong user name), thinking I was registered here....then registered here when I realised.....I'll have a read, thanks.

Welcome to the TRF!

Glad you had a good experience at Chessington motorcycles, they are not known for being too trail bike friendly.

Worked at Chessington Motorcycles(then Chessington Scooters) about 40 years ago,the owner ,Pete .is a really nice bloke, is the Mechanic still Tony ? he used too moonlight up at Ranmore with an ice cream van.Brings back good memories of happy days. Will have to pop in and see them soon,100 yards but a million miles away from Motorite in attitude and service,Pete is proper old school, not particularly dirt bike but if you went up there on a Lambretta there is not a thing he couldn`t tell you.

"[Tony] used to moonlight up at Ranmore with an ice cream van."

Can't believe he'd have been selling much ice cream at night, are you sure he wasn't using the van for what subsequently became known as dogging? ;)
