Just received this. Water Lane (Worldham BOAT 40) closed from 2 March for up to 6 months (or, as we know too well, longer, if its extended).
A bit of discussion going on with the TRF RoW bods across the region.
Suggestion that they have an end of year pot of gold to spend which if that's the case, lets hope it reopens soon.
I need to catch up and will then look to get in touch with HCC to find out more and press our view are firmly as we can.

Re: Water Lane (Alton) closed from 2 March
I went to the Lodden Vale "Meet Mario" gig in Reading last week, and one of the things I learned from Dave Carling, one of LV's RoW team, was that Water Lane is being upgraded to form part of The Writers Way http://www3.hants.gov.uk/hantswebnewslist.htm?id=644997
I've pasted the text from the link below. Good news: work has already started. Not so good news: there ain't going to be much evidence of water on the new Water Lane - it will be travelling through pipes under the new hardcore surface.

New route - The Writers' Way - will make Alton a gateway to the South Downs National Park
Friday, 25 July 2014
A new route is being developed that will make Alton one of the gateways to the South Downs National Park.
The trail, called 'The Writers' Way', is a joint project between Hampshire County Council, South Downs National Park Authority and East Hampshire District Council and should be fully open by May 2016.
The Writers' Way route will link Gilbert White's House in Selborne, Jane Austen's former home of Chawton and parts of Hampshire that William Cobbett describes in his book'Rural Rides'.
It will be a 20 mile circular accessible route for cyclists, walkers and horse riders that connects Alton station with the villages of Selborne, Farringdon, Worldham and Four Marks. A further spur linking Farringdon with Chawton and Alton is also being planned.
The planned 'Writers' Way' will follow existing public rights of way and small, quiet country lanes enabling the trail to be used all year round.
Councillor Keith Chapman, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: "The Writers' Way route aims to link tourist attractions, including the Watercress steam railway line, with Alton Station and create sustainable transport links. Funded through the Government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund, it will help people access this part of the South Downs National Park from Alton, making the town one of the gateways to the National park. We want to unlock all the economic potential that brings, by encouraging visitors and equally providing access to local people to areas of education and employment."
The total cost of the project is £131,220.
Works to improve bridleways have already been completed in Farringdon. Other improvements will be undertaken on rights of way in Chawton, Selborne, Worldham and Four Marks, as well as work to establish a Chawton spur along the route.
Part of the Writers' Way will use new walking and cycling links that are being planned for Alton town centre. This will include improvements to create a safe and attractive route between the station and the High Street. Further information on these works will be available at a public exhibition in the autumn this year.

Does this mean I will for ever hold the accolade of being the last person to swim in the big puddle.

Re: Water Lane (Alton) closed from 2 March
Are they doing anything to divert the water run off from the bordering fields? If not it should look much better by next Spring...when they will probably repair it and reclassify it as a footpath!

An article in the local press about Water Lane..... and the destruction at the hands of Hampshire County Council.
Dave Tilbury wrote a letter to challenge the points about vehicles.

Re: Water Lane (Alton) closed from 2 March
I took a look at the lane in Selbourne that's being repaired at the moment. The one at Priory Farm that you have to open the gate to access. It looks like the photo of Water Lane. You could drive a road car along it now! It's pretty much finished.
