Hi all,
I've been toying with the idea of doing some green laning for a while now and remember seeing TRF in a bike show somewhere so I thought I'd check it out. Although I've been riding on the road for many years, its almost always been on traillie type bikes - BMW F650GS, Transalp, Suzuki DR, Honda SL etc.
I commute to work daily in all weathers all year round and don't particularly relish going on public transport. I've been a bit wary about taking my bike green laning or going off-road because of the potential to damage it. So, as I now have two bikes I can take the little SL230 on the rough stuff.
Basically I am looking for some advise - I have very little experience of riding anywhere other than on roads. I did the BMW off-road skills weekend thing a few years ago and absolutely loved it. So I think I will enjoy riding with you guys. But before I shell out a load of money and buy all the gear I need to be sure this is something I will do more than once. My questions are:
a) I read somewhere that I can go for a trial ride with you guys without actually joining TRF. Have I understood that correctly?
b) I don't have any moto cross boots or knee protection. I can use an old summer jacket for upper body protection. But do I need a full blown pair of MX boots? or will these from M & P do? - http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=246775
I like the idea that they are waterproof too.
c) If I go for a pair of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400307065301?var=670036886710&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 will they fit under the boots? Do I need to go one size bigger on the boots?
Sorry about all the questions but I am a total novice to this and I hope to join up and go riding with you guys soon.
Cheers.
Naz

Hi Naz, welcome to the forum and hopefully the TRF, in reference to some of your questions, I think the rule of thumb is your more than welcome to join a newbie ride, ( unless it states TRF members only ) and see how you like it ( and whats not to like
)
Everyone has there own opinion on gear, but those boots look fine for lanning ( IMHO ), the main thing is ankle protection, and knee and hip protection is a must, if you go for knee pads they go inside the top of the boot, I prefer to wear enduro type trouser with the armour built in.
Also a good way to meet other members is at the club nights, just tip up and say hello.

Thanks Stewie. I notice I just missed the club night, hopefully I'll be there in 3 weeks' time and then go for a ride soon after.

Hey Naz,
Like you I am in the process of getting gear together. Personally I would inspect those boots before purchasing as feet can get mangled by many things... perhaps try them on and see if there is enough protection. The knee pads are probably better than what I use at the moment so should be fine. Hope to see you on the trails soon.

Thanks Khaotik. I have decided against those boots. I will be going to the US in March and a quick check showed you can pick up some decent MotoX boots for about $50. I think I'll hang on till then. By the time I've come to a club night it'll be nearly March anyway...

I'm off to San Antonio via Dallas in 2 weeks time so I'm hoping to pick up a few bits then.

Just a note of caution in reference to MX boots, great on protection, but tend to lack in sole flex and grip.

AlpineStars do a boot called an All Terrain boot in their Tech3 range. The sole has grip, it's pretty durable and inflexible. Been using mine for about 3 years now and try need replacing.
Worried I won't find something that can offer as good protection whilst affording grip.

Hi Naz,
To echoe Stewies words, you are most welcome to try out trail riding with us, without joining the TRF. So long as the leader has not stated its a members run only.
Nearly all of our beginner/easy rides are designed for new or potential members.
Pleased check out the information sheet in this section as well.
We hope that you will enjoy the ride and join the TRF.
Regards

Thanks very much for the welcome everyone. I have a bike, a helmet, jacket and gloves. Just need some lower body protection and I'll be ready. I'm really looking forward to it.

Is that what is otherwise known as a cricket box? Or were you thinking lower e.g. knees?
