Bike not starting - ideas???

Postby BevH » Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:18 pm

Hi
If anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong with my bike - nothing when I press ignition switch except a click down below. Battery has been charged and seems ok and also have had AA down, but he couldn't find anything - any ideas????
Tks

Hi Bev,

Could be a Squillion things, but......

Battery charged. Check
Ignition lights on.
Press button, here a click, but nowt happens......

Sounds like the starter relay is switching ( that'll be the click). This relay bungs power to the starter motor.

You can check that power is getting to the starter motor ( need a voltmeter for that). However, sounds like the starter motor itself is not working. My guess would be, replace the starter motor brushes.

Just a guess though.......

Bev,

Had a similar problem in the past and it was the starter motor brushes. Doesn't mean yours is the same though!

What bike?

Does it have a kick start?

Have you tried kicking it and then trying again with the e start?

Good luck

As stated, if you can hear a ''Click'' then it would suggest the Starter switch and relay are OK, you say that the battery is OK, but have you checked the CCA ( Cold Cranking Performance ), as it may well be showing 12v but if there's no Amps, it will engage the relay but not have the Amps to turn the starter motor.
Also you need to be checking that you have a complete circuit to the starter, if you do then you know the problem is the starter, check the Earth return at the Battery and from the Starter.
But as stated, need to know what type of bike it is, but it doesn't sound terminal. :D

Hi

It's a Beta Alp 200 (2012 reg). Myself and AA man have tried kickstart, but not much happened. He actually had a problem rotating it, but nothing happened

If your having problems turning the engine over with the Kick start, it would suggest that the starter bendix clutch has not disengaged properly, but I would have the bike in the air ( so you can turn the back wheel ) remove the spark plug, rotate the rear wheel and make sure there's nothing untoward in the moving parts, you say it a 2012 model, it should be still under the manufactures warranty.
Always good to get a fresh pair of eyes on a problem.:D I would take gtcodave up on his offer of help, :D let us know what it is, bit curious now :?:
