KTM 450 EXC 2006 Seat

Me again (sorry, last one today, I promise!)

I'm a big lad, it has to be said, both in height and width, and I'm finding my seat seriously painful when riding on road between lanes. Now, I know they are not designed for road riding but when you need to get from lane to lane, you have to! I have a rack when I need to go further afield and off road, I'm getting better at standing up as advised by Steve Braham.

However, I spotted this KTM Powerpart - a tall seat for riders over 6 foot (I am) with a Gel insert - sounds like it could be just what my poor rear has been searching for!!! It's quite an expense but if it helps me walk normally and sit down on my chair at work on a Monday morning, it'll be worth it!!!

Anyone had one of these? Anyone have an opinion to share? It says it's 40mm taller than the stock seat so surely must be softer and will absorb some of the road bumps? I'm going to look at my suspension set up too - see if that's too hard as well - but need an extra pair of hands for that so am waiting for my mate to come over and help me - my wife is strangely not interested!!!

I also considered an Air Hawke Pillion pad but that involves straps and could move/fall off and be an ADDITIONAL pain in the @rse!!!!!

Would appreciate any advice you may be able to provide.

I wouldn't try to trail-ride with an airhawk seat pad. I use one on my DRZ for long distance road work but remove it for the trails.

Two reasons;

One; it wasn't cheap and would easily get wrecked

Two; you can't slide your weight about on the bike fast enough for the rough stuff.

I've heard mixed opinions on the gel seats some love 'em some not


Your bum shouldn't be sore from a normal day's trail-riding. Maybe it just needs to be broken-in

Seriously though, I'd just see how you get on after a few more rides.

I agree with BYT, the Airhawk is not suitable offroad. I've used one for thousands of miles across Europe for the boring bits but they are too "wobbly" for use offroad. Its hard to explain but your weight will move about the bike without you wanting it to, when you are sat down. On the pegs its fine but going into a tight corner sat down you want to have full control of your weight. Great bits of kit for A-B miles on the straight tarmac bits though.

You need bum training. If you don't already, do a few miles a week on a bicycle. Your bum will bed in nicely without the need to attend a Barrymore pool party.

Cheapest option is to buy a pair of cycling shorts designed for dinky hard push bike seats. Wear these instead of underwear, your pills and ass cheeks will be grateful......

Had cycling shorts already so tried that on the ride out today - pleased to say they did the job - cheers Grant, £100 saved - I owe you a couple of beers

I think they make KTM seats from the hardest wood known to man, you cannot sit on them for longer than 2 minutes. Not really a problem for me as I stand up most off the time, even on the road.
