My wife has just bought her first trail bike, a used AJP PR4 200 Enduro. It has been bought second hand and is fitted with trials type tyres. We are looking to fit tyres suitable for trail riding (enduro type?) - any recommendations for a suitable option at a good price? The bike won't be used on road, other than when trail riding. Tyre sizes are 90/90-21 and 120/80-18.
Thanks!

Re: Tyre Recommendation
Trials tyres are pretty good I've heard. Just spent a weekend in Devon and our leader had one front and rear. The only time they seem to struggle is in deep sticky / slimey mud.
I run Maxxis M7304 on the front and Maxxis M7305 on the rear.
Seem to last forever and have lots of grip.

Re: Tyre Recommendation
The FIM marked enduro tyres are nice but expensive. I've started to use the Maxxi Maxxcross IT, which is a road legal motorcross tyre. Same as the ones Dave mentions. Cheaper and loads of grip. If you want to splash out try the Michelin enduro comp 4 / 3.

Re: Tyre Recommendation
Any FIM marked tyre is gonna wear quick when doing a lot of road work. Like others, I have gone to a MX style tyre they seem to wear better probably cos of the taller knobbly.

Maxxcross IT
Best VFM
Great grip in most conditions
Not too scarey on wet tarmac
Reasonable life

Re: Tyre Recommendation
So, the tyres that are on it are MT43s. Looking at this forum and the TRF main forum, it seems that they may not be too bad for trails, despite being a trials tyre. Any local wisdom appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Tyre Recommendation
So, the Maxxis Maxxcross IT 7304 and 7305 seem to be well recommended.
I believe the recommended tyre size is 90/90-21 front and 120/80-18 rear.
The Maxxcross IT are available as an 80/100 front. Will an 80 width tyre fit a rim designed for a 90 width tyre?
On the rear, the options for an 18" rim are 100, 110 or 120 width tyres, all with 100% profile. I guess as long as there is clearance there should be no problem with using a 120/100, would a slimmer 110 tyre also fit a rim designed for a 120?
I'm not used to offroad tyre sizing so would like some guidance on how much 'flexibility' there is in fitment sizes. I'm used to ordering 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 every time for my road bike, knowing those sizes are always available and and knowing they'll fit.
Thanks!

Re: Tyre Recommendation
Widths are normally no problem and very flexible. People fit different widths depending on the handling characteristics they want in different terrain.
80/100-21 will fit front no probs &
100-120 will all fit your rear rim no probs.
Just make sure the rim diameter is correct
