Recently been out a few times in the last few weeks and quite a few peoples battery's were flat! Maintenance in the winter includes charging/replacing your battery!

Currently on special at Infinity motorcycles they have the Oxford Optimiser/Charger for only £28 for the older model (I have one of these and it works a treat!)

Re: Maintenance
I don't like it, no offence. I own one of the newer Oxford Oximiser 900s and it's inferior to the £12, rain proof one I got at Aldi. It just doesn't have the balls the rejuvenate a dead battery.
I don't want to be mr. misery, but if Oxford are meant to be a really good brand I haven't noticed. Are they one of these companies that used to be good and now make cheap products, using their name to sell them?
Bought my bro some oxford heated grips last year and they are falling apart in places and seem poorly deisnged compared to the Taiwanese ones i got for myself off eBay.
Someone please shed some light on this if i'm wrong.

Dave - Like i said "older model" - follow the link - i have one and it works a treat so will vouch for it.
Not sure of the new stuff - you could be right and I guess this is the forum to discuss these things. Please post a link to your recommended product for anyone interested to follow.
To be honest - anything will do as long as it does the job and they have a charged battery! if not get a new one!
cheers

Re: Maintenance
Annoyingly today I had an exam to sit and I found out my poor serow had a flat battery and would not start - really annoying since I voltmeter tested it last week and it seemed fine. Luckily I still have my nippy 125 orhterwise I would have missed it. One thing that is really annoying about central london is lack of garages. I wish I could charge up my battery! I'm sick of fixing things on the street. One thing that Brian(silvergull) mentioned was the oil changes for a serow. I had a look and it is blacker than black - time for a change. After how many miles do you green laner#s change your oil?

Re: Maintenance
For a Serow I would have thought if you are greenlaning it in anger every 1500 miles is sufficient.
You don't want to worry too much about maintenance, in the TRF there is always someone nearby to help with the right tools and bitz

Re: Maintenance
Totally agree about the Oxford stuff, the build quality is just not there anymore
.
As for batteries, most enduro type bikes use the battery for re-starts once the engine is warm, and are meant to be kicked over in the first instance .
But get a jel filled battery, its all about the cold crank power

a serow needs frequent oil change. clean both filters, but if possible replace the upper with a genuine part only, and ensure you the the orientation correct. max every 1000 miles between changes . the lower one can be tricky to get out, take not to round off the head.

in my case, its not a flat battery, although it seems like it. the starter motor needs a rebuild, brushes gone probably or seized bearing, or shorting out. a kick start option is essential, as you saw.
