Public Way ?

Postby Stewie » Sun Dec 22, 2013 6:11 pm

Out and about today looking for UCR's and came across this sign, does anyone know what type of access it refers to :? .

Good few routes, but very slippy  running at road pressures on wet chalk, but where thye rain was running down, it had cleaned a foot wide path up :D .

View from the top :D .

The routes were marked as '' Other routes with public access'' on the map and '' Other road, drive or track, with no other signage at either end apart from the ones in the pictures.

Hi Stewie,

Was this just south of Hindhead? I've seen similar Public Way signs in Hampshire (just over the Surrey/Hampshire border. Some were marked on the 1:25,000 as UCR's, others as tracks. Sharpie knows the area well, so he will know what can and can't be ridden. So for me, a Public Way, with no other prohibitive signage is good to go!

They were on the north side of the South Downs around the Glatting Beacon, there's a fair few around the area.

Hi Stewie,

They normally put those signs up when it is a UCR/ORPA.. If you send me the map reference I will check my map, Dave Tilbury our ROW guru sent me a load of legal UCRs.

Just came across this whilst mapping a route along the South Downs -

2.4 Public Ways (G-roads)
A G-road is a class of public highway designated by WSCC. They are often unsurfaced tracks or paths and are used primarily by walkers, horse riders and cyclists. They are sometimes referred to as ‘green lanes’, although there is no legal definition of a green lane, or unclassified county roads (UCRs). Many provide useful links within the Public Rights of Way network. WSCC’s PRoW service has, since April 2011, taken responsibility for inspection and maintenance of these routes and has chosen to refer to these paths as Public Ways.

Hi Stewie,
I have ridden a couple of public ways or orpa near rogate west sussex, contacted county council row about these routes and asked if it was ok to ride my bike along them. They said that they would encourage the use of these lanes, but we must be careful and considerate towards other users. Not had any bother from other users apart from the stare of death from a women dog walker.
